Cubism-Impressionism-Surrealism

from John Kiran Fernandes by John Kiran Fernandes

about

a solo clarinets & bass clarinets piece from my first solo album (that originally came out in 2011 - before the Elephant 6 Holiday Surprise tours)

this originally came out on manufactured CDs with unique, hand-drawn cover artwork on each copy by my son, @jeremykiranfernandes, and a few drawn by my daughter, sophie glenn fernandes

the majority of this album was recorded "live" at a "live in the lobby session" at WUOG 90.5 FM, in Athens, GA - in one-take, straight through
my method included mixing 4-track cassette recordings to a mini-disc recorder - which i played along with, in a lengthy performance in the WUOG lobby

so, in essence, this piece features four pre-recorded tracks, and one track of me playing over the top of it

i remember practicing the "head" of this piece over and over again before the session, because i only had one shot at it

i employ a bunch of extended techniques through my clarinets for this piece - a thick vibrato that almost sounds like singing saws, etc.

i've received four different compliments from musicians i admire about my various techniques:

scott spillane (of the gerbils & neutral milk hotel) told me he likes when i do the staccato "tongue-popping" technique through my horn

julian koster (of the music tapes & neutral milk hotel) told me he likes when i do the thick, fast vibrato - i assume this is because he likes old records, and this sound simulates the sound of an old/warped 78

sofia lute (of the rishis) told me she likes when i do the fast trills on clarinet

and laura camacho (of athens tango project and the augusta symphony) told me she likes how i immediately respond to other sounds during improvisations - in a super intuitive manner

i hear some parallels in this piece with a group i discovered after i had recorded this, called the world saxophone quartet

there are parts of this piece that sound like you walked into the thickest part of a wild jungle - with monkey cries & bird squawks

there are also some parallels to minimalism in this piece (with the low repeating figures on bass clarinet)

thanks for reading & possibly listening, and i hope you enjoy!
